Ohrdruf, Germany, 1945.

Historical footage concerning Nazi crimes and their aftermath. Silent historical footage; use the player controls to pause.

What would you want to say first?

That is the question I have watching the man in the fur hat speaking to a soldier in this clip. Other men stand just behind him. I can see his mouth moving, but I cannot hear the words.

Was he explaining something that had happened? Asking for something he needed? Speaking for himself, or for the people beside him?

I wonder about the practical difficulty of making yourself understood. Did they share a language? Was someone interpreting outside the frame?

This short exchange makes me want to hear his own account. His words would matter far more than anything I could read into his expression.

As you watch him speak, what would you most want to understand about this conversation?
