Standing together

Ohrdruf, Germany, 1945.

Historical footage concerning Nazi crimes and their aftermath. Silent historical footage; use the player controls to pause.

I find myself wondering whether the men in this group knew one another well.

They stand close together beside a soldier. Some look towards him; others look towards the camera. I can see the group, but I know very little about the relationships within it.

Had any of them helped each other through imprisonment? Were they from the same place, or had they met here? When they eventually left, would they have any way of finding one another again?

Watching this restored footage, I think about how much a familiar person might matter when almost everything else is uncertain. That does not tell me these men were friends. It makes me want to know whether they were.

What do you find yourself wondering about the people standing together in this scene?
